27 Aug 2012, 8.38 pm GMT

Houston, 27 August (Argus) — Grim corn crop conditions worsened only slightly over the last week in the 18 states that produce most the nation's crop.

Surveyors estimated 48pc of the drought-wracked crop to be at least fair during the week ending 26 August, according to the latest US Department of Agriculture (USDA) report.

Kansas crop conditions showed some of the strongest decline among major corn states. The percentage of corn considered at least good in the state fell 3pt, to 3pc, and the portion of crop at least fair dropped 4pt to 17pc. Conditions were flat in Iowa, with 47pc of the crop there at least fair and only 15pc of the crop considered at least good. Indiana reported a 1pt uptick in the percentage of crop considered at least good, to 10pc, while the total percentage of crop considered at least fair was unchanged at 30pc.
