Houston, 15 August (Argus) — ExxonMobil confirmed that a group it leads has been selected by Ukraine's government to develop the Skifska natural gas field in the Black Sea.
Ukraine Environment and Natural Resources Minister Eduard Stavitsky made comments to reporters earlier today about the decision. “We are pleased by today's announcement by minister Stavitsky,” ExxonMobil spokesman Pat McGinn said. “We look forward to receiving the formal resolution of the Ukraine Cabinet of Ministers on the award of the Skifska block.”
ExxonMobil will be operator of the project under a production-sharing contract with the government. Partners include Shell, Austria's OMV and Ukraine's state-owned Nadra Ukrainy.
The decision follows Ukraine's selection in May of Shell and Chevron to explore and develop two onshore shale-gas formations. ExxonMobil was among the losing bidders in that case. Ukraine is trying to reduce its reliance on imported gas from Russia.
